The Nanny Balance

By: Romi Sussman (www.RomiSussman.com)

Finding the balance between you and your nanny and the household responsibilities

Since we’ve had a nanny in the house, I actually find myself learning a great deal about job sharing and communication. When the nanny is there, I always assume that everything is getting done. She, however, doesn’t want to step on my toes, and she assumes that I’m doing what I thought she was doing.

For instance, the other night, the kids were supposed to get in the tub. For an hour, while I was checking email and doing dishes, I thought she was bathing them. She was folding laundry and thought I was bathing them. So, the little heathens were running naked around the house and having the time of their lives. While it was quite fun for them, it wasn’t particularly productive for us!

Now, I’ve learned that we need to set an agenda together so that we know what our tasks are. She knows what I plan to do between 5 and 8pm (the witching hours) and I know what she plans. This way, we don’t have little naked people prancing around the house, and everything seems to get done in an orderly fashion…well…as orderly as can be expected with four boys under seven!
