The Tooth Fairy

By: Romi Sussman (www.RomiSussman.com)

What to do when your child loses a tooth

My seven year old is challenging us about the Tooth Fairy. He’s lost quite a number of teeth, and we insist, each time, that he put the tooth under his pillow. The tooth fairy then comes in the middle of the night, takes the tooth and leaves him money. Well, for whatever reason, he seems to doubt our story.

He came home the other day very upset. Apparently, he’d lost a tooth somewhere between school and home, but didn’t have the evidence in his hand. He insisted that the tooth fairy wouldn’t come if he didn’t have the tooth to give to her. When I told him that she would, indeed, still come, he wanted to know how I knew. With a twinkle in his eye he said, “Mom, come on…you’re the tooth fairy. Why don’t you just admit it!”

So, now he’s decided to put a video camera in his room and catch the tooth fairy in action. Ahhh..kids. What are you going to do with them? I’m insisting on continuing the tooth fairy story for as long as I can. But, how long that will be is the question…How do kids figure these things out so quickly?
