Being Upfront with a New Nanny
By: Romi Sussman (www.RomiSussman.com)Here are important tips for clarifying your priorities with your new nanny
Easing a new nanny into your daily routine is not always the easiest task. If you think about it, it’s hard to invite someone new to come and live in your home, see all of your habits, and work around you. It will certainly take some time to adjust and this adjustment is natural. Try to reserve judgment for awhile and help the nanny to ease into her new routine.
One incredibly important point on this topic is to be upfront. If you plan to go out three nights a week and just assume that the nanny will cover these nights, things may not work for you. You need to be very clear from the beginning about your expectations and her expectations. What hours will she work? When does she have time off? Is nighttime babysitting included? Or is it a way for her to make extra money? Does she have a curfew on her nights out? The more upfront you are from the beginning, the smoother things will be.
Similarly, what do you expect around the house? Do you want her to do the dishes? To mop the floors? Is it alright if she watches television during the day? Do you need to teach her about your eating habits, allergies or dietary restrictions?
These are all important questions to consider. Before the nanny even arrives, you should make a list of points you want to discuss and guidelines you want to ensure are met. This will make for an easier transition process and, hopefully, a successful one!
